General Information

Signs & Symptoms of Depression

1. Lack of energy
2. Sleep disturbance (early morning waking/difficulty getting to sleep)
3. Lack of interest in oneself and ones surroundings.
4. Lack of self esteem
5. Feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness.
6. Withdrawal from family & friends.
7. Persistent feelings of sadness, irritability or anger.
8. Inability to cope with everyday problems
9. Tearfulness, indecisiveness
10. Poor concentration, changes in appetite, complains of vague pains
11. Neglect of responsibilities
12. Reduced coping skills
13. Substance/alcohol abuse

Suicide has a strong associated with depression but it’s important to stress that suicide can for example occur as a result of a traumatic life event and that the vast majority of those suffering from depression are not suicidal.

Signs that may indicate someone is thinking of ending their life:

1. A previous suicide attempt
2. Expressing suicidal thoughts
3. Preoccupation with death
4. Depression (research has shown that it is a factor in some suicides)
5. Becoming isolated -feelings of worthlessness
6. Alcohol/drug abuse, (alcohol is often used to “dull” the pain)
7. Sudden changes in mood or behaviour
8. Making final arrangements – such as giving away a prized possession.

Factors associated with suicide: (precipitating factors in 26% of all suicides)

1. Loss and feelings of hopelessness (e.g. following relationship breakdown)
2. Unemployment (diminished self image and self worth)
3. Financial problems
4. Alcohol & substance abuse (alcohol factor in up to 65% of all suicides)
5. Physical/Terminal illness.
6. Bullying
7. Sexual orientation issues
8. Mental issues (schizophrenia/Depression etc)
9. Hopelessness
10. Copy cat suicides
11. Victims of abuse
