A Sligo womens’ business group has announced a major fundraising event in support of two local charities.
The Sligo Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW) are organising a Winter Gala Ball for Saturday November 5 in the Clarion Hotel, to raise funds and awareness for the charities who are working to prevent suicide. The charities are STOP which is based in Dromahair and the North West branch of Aware.
BPW launched the fundraising Ball in the Yeats’ Memorial Building at their open night for new members. It was attended by BPW members old and new, representatives from STOP and Aware and by the Mayor, Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady.
Guest speakers were Mike Hannon from Business Sligo who gave a talk on the progress and successes of business in Sligo and Mel McKeown from Gilroy Gannon who presented their new Healthcheck Questionnaire for businesses.
It is hoped that the BPW Winter Gala Ball will raise over €10,000 through sponsorship and from the proceeds of an auction that will take place on the night.
STOP (Suicide Teach Organise Prevent) was formed by three families from Dromahair – the Kerins, Fallons and the McTernans who have each lost a son to suicide. STOP aims to improve awareness of the potential for suicide and so to prevent it.
Aware is a voluntary organisation formed by a group of interested patients, relatives and mental health professionals, whose aims are to assist that section of the population whose lives are directly affected by depression.
The fund raiser will start with a champagne reception with jazz music in the newly refurbished former chapel on the grounds of the Clarion. This will be followed by a five course meal. There will be many spot prizes, and music on the night will be provided by the 17-piece Black Magic Big Band.
